Viewing and visitation for Mr. Abel Covarrubias Jr., 85 of Lubbock will begin 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Calvillo Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Service will begin 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 19, 2025, at Luz En La Comunidad Church (4202 Ave J, Lubbock, Texas 79412) with Pastor Domingo Ibarra officiating. Burial will follow at City of Lubbock Cemetery under the direction of Calvillo Funeral Home & Chapel.
On the morning of Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Abel went to be with the Lord. He was born on June 18, 1940, in Rockport, Texas to the late Abel Sr. and Adelaida Covarrubias. Later in life on December 18, 1976, he went on to marry Noemi Ibarra in Petty, Texas cherishing 49 years of a loving marriage.
A respected member of the Lubbock Independent School District, Abel served as the Textbook Supervisor, where his commitment to ordering and delivering textbooks helped nurture the minds of countless students. His passion for education was evident in the way he cared for each detail, ensuring that learning materials were always available to support young scholars in their journey.
Beyond his professional achievements, Abel found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was known for his delightful sense of humor, enjoying jokes and collecting funny saying t-shirts that brought smiles to those around him. He had an infectious love for music, often spending happy afternoons in Rockport Beach and Corpus Christi, where he enjoyed the melodies of all genres. Whether it was the soothing sounds of a band performance or the lively notes that filled the air, music was a source of happiness for him.
Abel’s love for Jesus was the cornerstone of his existence. He found joy in sharing the message of Jesus with those around him, embodying his faith with every conversation, inspiring others to seek their path in light and grace. Even in his final days, his spirit remained steadfast, radiating love and kindness that comforted those near him.
He lavished his kids and grandkids with affection, creating a warm and nurturing environment filled with laughter and love. A whimsical tradition of his was giving out candy and cookies, delighting the hearts of children and adults alike. With his artistic and creative flair, he often expressed his love for life through various crafts, further endearing him to all who had the pleasure of witnessing his talents. His generous spirit and sweet treats were a testament to his kind heart, ensuring that those around him always felt special and appreciated.
As we remember Abel Covarrubias Jr., we celebrate the life of a man who wore many hats with grace. From his devoted career to his loving nature as a father and grandfather, he left an indelible mark on the lives he touched. Abel’s legacy will continue to resonate in the stories shared among family and friends—the laughter, the music, and the love he gave freely to all who had the privilege to know him.
He is preceded in death by his parents Abel Sr. and Adelaida Covarrubias; a son Michael Covarrubias; brothers Felipe Covarrubias and Danny Covarrubias.
Survivors include his wife Noemi Covarrubias of Lubbock; sons; Abel Covarrubias llI (Mandy) of Lubbock; Joseph Covarrubias (Lisa) of Hobbs, N.M.; and Paul Covarrubias of Lubbock; one brother Fidel Covarrubias of Corpus Christi; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
