Maria was born on March 29, 1924, in Corpus Christi to the late Catarino and Juliana Ruiz. Maria was a faithful and devout Catholic. Later in life on October 29, 1948, she married Guadalupe Esquivel in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, he preceded her in death on January 1, 2013. In her early days she was a very hard worker chopping and picking cotton to help provide for her family. She was a great homemaker, always had delicious food prepared when anyone came by to visit and her specialty was tamales. Her family will always remember how dedicated she was to them. Whether through babysitting, cooking or simply just listening to them, Maria was a very special example of a mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Guadalupe Esquivel; sons Jesus Esquivel and Guadalupe Esquivel Jr.; daughters, Juanita Clements and Mary Mewborn; and a grandson Mark Mewborn.

Those left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Guadalupe Mote of Lubbock, Connie and Welmer Deshan of Amarillo,  and Frances and David Mesa of Odessa; eight sons, Juan and Elsa Esquivel of San Antonio, Bonifacio and Blanca Esquivel of Lubbock, Jose and Gina Esquivel of Lubbock, Modesto Esquivel of Littlefield, David and Patricia Esquivel of Floydada, Jesus and Benita Esquivel of Lubbock, Roberto and Ofelia Esquivel of Lubbock, and Reynaldo and Martha Esquivel of Post; 29 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren.
