W J Martin, a beloved son of Tahoka, Texas, and a cherished member of his community, passed away on May 25, 2026, at the age of 59. Born in Tahoka on August 11, 1966, to the late Lee Lane and Jerlean Martin, W J lived a life marked by hard work, creativity, and an infectious zest for joy that touched all who knew him.

W J attended Tahoka High School, where he loved to play football and basketball. He spent so much time at the town local basketball court he warmly named it "Martin Square Garden." His enthusiasm for life extended to other various interests including building things with his hands, working on cars and engaging in construction projects.

Camping was another favorite pastime, offering him a peaceful retreat amid nature's beauty. Among the many things that brought him happiness, his heart was carried away by the rhythm of his favorite song, "Jam on it," a tune that perfectly echoed the upbeat and lively spirit he embodied.

Professionally, W J built a strong career as a machine operator within the rock industry. His journey took him through a variety of well-respected local businesses, including Cal Womack Farms, Cooks family business, O'Donnell Waterworks, Stanley Forbes Oil Industries, and the B&B Forbes oil business in Pecos, Texas. Through these roles, he was known for his skill and dedication, earning him deep respect among his colleagues and community.

Beyond his work, W J was the life of every gathering, his love of a good time and cheerful nature making him the heart of the party. His warm personality will be remembered fondly by all who had the pleasure of sharing in his laughter and camaraderie. At home, he was a devoted husband to Brenda Tillman of Tahoka. Together, they shared a life enriched by family and love.

W J’s legacy includes cherished memories of his late parents, Lee Lane and Jerlean Martin; his sisters, Jerry Ann Martin and Adell Martin Graves; his brother Sammie Martin; and his grandmother Lilly B. Catly, whose memories continue to inspire those who miss him deeply.

He is survived by his spouse Brenda Tillman of Tahoka; his brothers Wilbert Martin of Tahoka, J L Martin of Kaufman, Tommy Martin of San Antonio, Lyndell Martin of Tahoka, Donald Martin of Tahoka, Raydell Martin of Tahoka, Darl Martin of Lubbock and Rev. Kenneth Burns of Lubbock; his sister Katy Martin of Tahoka; two stepchildren Robert Tillman of Lubbock and Allison Graves of Tahoka; a special niece Stephanie Graves of Lubbock; also other numerous nieces and nephews; and the feline companions who held a special place in his heart—Garfield, Boots, and Socks—whom he loved as dearly as his own children.

Though his passing leaves a profound sense of loss, those who loved W J will forever carry with them the vibrant light of his spirit, the echo of his laughter, and the warmth of his companionship. His life was a testament to the joy found in simple pleasures, the strength of family ties, and the enduring power of love and friendship.
