On the morning of Sunday, August 24, 2025, Chavelo went to be with the Lord. He was born on September 8, 1960, in Lubbock to Sabas and the late Bernice Mendez. Chavelo was a jack of all trades, with a remarkable talent as an auto mechanic. His hands could fix anything, but it was his heart that truly made him special—a good person all around, he embodied kindness and generosity in every interaction.
Chavelo's passion for cars was evident, particularly his deep affection for his Chevelle, a reflection of his love for all things automotive. Beyond the grease and tools of his profession, he found joy in simpler pleasures which included listening to music, dancing and his gritos. The serenity of fishing brought him a sense of peace and reflection. His fondness for literature was evident through his love for the thrilling novels published by John Grisham, providing him with both adventure and entertainment. These small moments brought him immense happiness and were often shared with those he loved.
He is preceded in death by his mother Bernice Mendez (2009) and a brother Nicholas Mendez (2020).
Survivors include a son Eric Adams of Lubbock; a daughter Virginia Adams of Lubbock; his father Sabas Mendez of Lubbock; a brother Enrique Mendez and wife Corinne of Lubbock; sisters Sylvia and husband Gilbert Moreno of Lubbock, Lydia M. Martinez of Levelland, Sonia Roberts and husband Terry Watson of Rosharon, TX and Rachel Serbin of New Deal; five grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
