Corporal Grady Mitchell

June 23, 1945 — January 30, 2021

The family of Grady Lee Mitchell, 75 of Lubbock will receive friends, and family on Friday, February 5, 2021 from 4:00PM-6:00PM at Calvillo Funeral Home Chapel.  A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 6, 2021 at 11:00AM at Calvillo Funeral Home & Chapel, Lubbock, TX.  (206 E. 19th Street 79403) with Pastor Deshun Avery officiating.  An Additional service will follow at Bethlehem Baptist Church (500 S. Frances Street, Terrell, Tx. 75160) on Saturday February 13, 2021 with Rev. Richard Rollerson officiating.  Military Honors Burial will follow in Fort Worth National Cemetery on Monday, February 15, 2021 at 11AM. Arrangements were made under the direction of Calvillo Funeral Home & Chapel.

Grady went to be with the Lord on Saturday evening, January 30, 2021. He was born on June 23, 1945 in Terrell, Texas to the patronage of Vannie and Willie Mae Mitchell and graduated from Barnett High School. While there he sang in the Male Chorus Choir. He played football, baseball, and basketball.

On May 29, 1965 he enlisted into the United States Army and served Honorably in the Vietnam War until he was honorably discharged from active duty on May 28, 1971.  During his Service in the Army, Grady received numerous medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, NS RHW Vasishta Seva Medal.

Later in Life, Grady met/married the love of his life, Mary Humphrey in Dallas.  Grady/Mary cherished 46 years of friendship and marriage.  Grady loved and adored Mary until the end of his assigned Journey.  Grady and Mary held their vows before God at the core of their hearts:  In sickness and in health until death do us apart. Mary will always love Grady and cherish their memories together; she is forever honored to be his wife and partner.

Grady trusted God with his heart. He allowed God to order his steps/direct his path.  Grady was an active member of First Progressive Baptist Church.  While there he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, member of Men Male Chorus, long time member of Usher Board.  Grady was very honored when Pastor Homer Avery Sr. appointed him to be a member of church’s financial staff.  Grady was a dedicated worker, until his health started to decline.

He worked for Lubbock Housing Authority as Maintenance Supervisor for 14 years.  In his spare time, Grady enjoyed spending quality time with family/ friends.   He was a long time Dallas Cowboy fan, and he enjoyed watching the team play.

He was known to be kindhearted, lover of people and will be remembered as a supportive and generous soul.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Vannie & Willie Mae Mitchell, a brother Charles Mitchell.

Survivors included his loving wife, Mary Mitchell of Lubbock, one Son, Deverick Jones of Dallas, five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, two brothers: William and Sister-N-Law Verna Mitchell and Vasser Mitchell all of Dallas.  A host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
